Babul Keyer USA and Islamic Relief partner to open savings accounts for 2,400 beneficiaries with 2,000 Birr seed money each.

Addis Ababa, July 10, 2024 – In a major step toward financial inclusion, Babul Keyer USA in partnership with Islamic Relief has opened new savings bank accounts for 2,400 beneficiaries, with each receiving an initial deposit of 2,000 Ethiopian Birr.

For many of these individuals, this marks their first formal banking experience. Women who once hid money under mattresses, youth who couldn't qualify for loans, families without any financial safety net – all now have the foundation for economic security.

"Before this program, I kept my savings in a hole in the wall of my home," shares Fatuma, a mother of four. "I was always afraid of theft or fire. Now I have a bank account, and watching my savings grow gives me hope for my children's future."

The initiative focuses on low-income families, women, youth, and vulnerable households who previously had limited or no access to formal banking services. Beyond opening accounts, the program includes financial literacy training to ensure beneficiaries understand how to manage their money effectively.

This partnership represents a significant expansion of Babul Keyer USA's livelihood programs, which already include income generation activities through bread-making machines, shoe production, tailoring, and washing services for community members.
